Person commits suicide at medical facility
MANISTIQUE — Officers responded to a medical facility on Monday for a resident who committed suicide.
At approximately 6:09 a.m., Manistique Public Safety officers and Manistique EMS were dispatched to Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility (SMCF) in Manistique for a possible life-threatening situation.
The first officer arrived at 6:12 a.m. and was briefed by SMCF staff, and determined that there was no risk to staff, facility residents, or the general public.
A subsequent investigation began to determine the cause of the alleged life-threatening situation.
EMS remained on scene but were later cleared as patient transport was not needed.
The investigation found that a resident at the facility took his own life with no intent of harming anyone other than himself.
Outside of the immediate event, the investigation found no risk to any SCMF staffer or other residents.
Officers cleared the scene at approximately 9:28 a.m., but the investigation is still ongoing. There is no indication of foul play at this time.
“The staff and administration at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility is being praised for their quick and professional handling of the situation. The seamless collaboration between SMCF staff, Manistique Public Safety officers, and Manistique EMS personnel helped eliminate any disruption to the daily care of the other residents within the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility,” according to a press release.
Manistique Public Safety was assisted by the Michigan State Police (MSP) along with representatives from the Eastern Upper Peninsula Crisis Response Team (EUP-CRT).
