Kewadin Casinos suffer data breach, gaming halted
SAULT STE. MARIE — Gaming operations were halted at all five Kewadin Casino locations Monday, as the network of casinos responded to a data breach.
“This morning, we experienced a data security incident that impacted our gaming operations. We immediately enlisted the help of third-party experts to determine how this incident was caused and to restore our gaming operations as quickly as possible. That investigation is ongoing,” the Kewadin said in a post published across its location-specific Facebook pages late Sunday night.
Gaming operations were halted at 7 a.m. Monday across all locations. The news followed a separate announcement by Kewadin Sunday afternoon that, due to technical issues, the Manistique, Christmas and Hessel locations were closed as of 3:23 p.m. Sunday. At that time, the Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace gaming floors were still open.
“We understand that this is inconvenient and unexpected news. Please know our experts are working around-the-clock to restore gaming operations. We apologize for this inconvenience,” the casinos said in their late Sunday posts.
The incident prevented hotel guests from checking in at Kewadin hotel Sunday afternoon, though guests who were already checked in were permitted to stay.
The Kewadin website, www.kewadin.com, was also down Monday morning. By early afternoon, the website had been restored.
No further information about the breach or how long gaming would be suspended was available as of press time.
