Dog killed by police in City of Menominee

MENOMINEE — Menominee City Police Department officers shot and killed a dog in the city of Menominee Thursday after two dogs were determined to be a threat to children at Menominee Elementary School.

Officers from the Menominee Police Department responded Thursday to a report of two aggressive pit bulls near Menominee Elementary School after the School Resource Officer alerted dispatch that the dogs were at the playground barking at children aggressively.

Officers quickly located the dogs in the 1200 block of 10th Street, where it was initially reported that a person had been attacked. It was later determined that while the dogs aggressively charged the individual, no actual bite occurred. Shortly after, another person was chased by the dogs and had to seek safety in the bed of a pickup truck.

Attempts were made to capture the dogs using a dog pole and tasers, but those efforts were unsuccessful. As the situation escalated, officers observed the dogs running back toward the school playground. To prevent an immediate threat to the children, officers struck the dogs with a patrol vehicle and subsequently had to fatally shoot one of them.

The second dog, a brown and white female pit bull, remains at large and may be injured. Residents are urged to use caution and report any sightings to the Menominee Police Department at 906-863-5568.

“The safety of the community, especially our children, remains our top priority. We appreciate the cooperation of residents as we work to locate the remaining dog and ensure public safety,” the Menominee Police Department said in a post made through the department’s official Facebook page.
