ESCANABA — Adam and Megan Demeuse founded A&M Roofing in 2022, with Adam’s approximately 15 years of hands-on experience as the base. As a third-generation roofer, he branched out to start his own company after following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Megan, who also has another job, runs the office side of the business.

While building a family in the Danforth area, the couple is looking to expand the operations of A&M, which have already grown in just the last few years.

In 2022, after Megan handled making sure the business was properly licensed and insured, Adam performed jobs the first year by himself. Megan did all the book work – estimates, payroll, bills, etc. – but Adam was the only one working up on roofs.

During the second season, they began to build a crew, and hired an additional roofer for a two-man team. By season three – last year, 2024 – the crew grew again, and A&M employed three others in addition to the Demeuses. The positions are full-time seasonal.

Funnily enough, one of the men used to do roofing work with Adam’s grandfather some 40 years ago.

Most recently, this January, Adam and the rest of the crew all became certified Master Craftsmen for shingle brand CertainTeed. Certification is a step that “provides workforce standards, produces high-quality jobs, and ensures warranty compliance,” according to CertainTeed.

Megan said that everyone on the crew is a great worker, and the couple knows how fortunate they are and strives to treat their people well. Adam said that he is confident enough in his team to be able to leave a job site and trust them to do high-quality work, which not only allows him home time, but could potentially lead to the hiring and training of more people in the future – and therefore the ability to serve multiple clients at a time.

A&M has been doing mostly residential jobs, primarily in Escanaba and Gladstone, but also completed jobs in Rock, Stonington, and Iron Mountain, to name a few. Delta County is the main coverage area.

In addition to installing asphalt and rubber roofing, both as replacements on existing structures and on new builds, A&M also does repair and patching.

In the winter, they provide ice removal services. Adam explained that ice buildup tends to be a problem for older homes with poor ventilation.

Roofing is a weather-dependent industry that generally runs from spring through fall, but the jobs are rolling in and A&M is already filling the docket for 2025.

“We have some jobs signed up, and people have been calling,” Megan said. “It’s better to get in sooner than later, because we start filling up quickly.”

Both Adam and Megan said they’d like to expand and do more commercial work. They have the capacity to handle it, and completed a few commercial jobs last year.

Though he’d eventually like to have a second team and be able to serve more customers, Adam says he would need to make sure to take the time to train people carefully and properly. Rather than trying to rush growth by sacrificing quality, Megan said that A&M always wants to take the time to do things well for their customers.
