Traffic stops leads to two drug arrests
ESCANABA — Michigan State Police (MSP) Gladstone Post arrested two individuals on unrelated charges involving felony drug offenses and bringing contraband into a jail this week. The arrests were made within five hours of each other.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, around 5:40 p.m., a Gladstone Post trooper conduced a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on 3rd Avenue North near North 30th Street in Escanaba. The trooper initiated the stop after observing a traffic violation. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of the passenger, Jeffrey Schultz, 27, of Rock for possession of methamphetamine and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Troopers transported Schultz to the Delta County Jail. During the booking process, it was discovered that Schultz had additional illegal drugs concealed on his person. He was additionally charged with smuggling contraband into a jail, a felony offense.
Schultz was arraigned on Jan. 9 in the 94th District Court and his bond is set at $7,500. He is due to be back in court on Jan. 30.
Also on Wednesday, Jan. 8, around 9:50 p.m., troopers from the MSP Gladstone Post conducted a traffic stop on South Lincoln Road in Escanaba for a traffic violation. The following investigation resulted in the arrest of the passenger, Brian Johnson, 33, of Rock due to outstanding warrants for his arrest. Johnson was taken to the Delta County Jail for processing where it was discovered that he had suspected methamphetamine concealed on his person. He was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamine and bringing contraband into a jail.
Johnson was arraigned on Jan. 9 in the 94th District Court and his bond is set at $1,500. He is due to be back in court on Jan. 30.
According to the MSP press release, Johnson’s arrest marks the fifth individual arrested for felony drug offenses within the past week due to the Gladstone Post’s patrol efforts.
