Fire damages garage, contents in Ford River

FORD RIVER — A garage was damaged in a fireThursday night in Ford River Township. Firefighters were called to the blaze at the corner of 10.75 Lane and K Road around 8 p.m.

Ford River Fire Chief Brian Nelson said that flames were coming from out of the back side of the garage when firefighters arrived and had spread internally through the open space of the pole barn-type structure that was used for storage.

They were able to get it under control pretty quickly, but it took between 90 minutes and 2 hours to douse all the hot spots.

“We had to remove some of the siding to gain access to areas where there were hot spots, and then, kind of, you know, pull out some of the stuff so that we could get water on the areas that were still showing as hot,” Nelson said.

He noted that there was no heat source, such as a furnace, inside the building and that the cause for the fire was undetermined.

Though the garage is still standing, it took structural damage and may or may not be salvaged. The items that had been stored within are likely a mix of ruined and not; Nelson guessed that some would probably be saved.

No injuries were sustained and no other buildings were damaged.

On scene alongside the Ford River Township Volunteer Fire Department were the fire departments from Bark River, Escanaba Township, and the City of Escanaba with the Wells Township water tender. UPPCO, Delta County Sheriff, Michigan State Police and Delta County Central Dispatch also assisted.
