Ice fishing clinic hopes to lure U.P. women

ESCANABA — Local women interested in learning the ins and outs of ice fishing have a chance to learn from those in the field.

On Saturday, Dec. 28, Fishing 4All Seasons, Blade’s Bait and Tackle and the UP Ice Fishing and Hunting Expo are hosting a women’s ice fishing clinic.

The day full of instruction, presentation and hands-on training takes place at Blade’s Bait and Tackle in Gladstone.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with instructor introductions, an ice safety presentation and more.

At 10 a.m., attendees learn shelter setups, auger handling, jigging, tip-ups and electronics such as Vexilar, sonar and LiveScope.

If you can, stay the afternoon to go ice fishing from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The fishing is open to all and organizers encourage bring your own ice transportation — ATV, UTV to snowmobile, or coordinate a ride with a buddy.

Attendees will get to try their hands at reading Navionics, Flasher and LiveScope while learning how to search potential areas and structure holding fish.

Should the ice conditions not be safe, the clinic will take place inside Blade’s Bate and Tackle’s heated garage. If it takes place in the garage, participants will be notified and asked to bring a folding chair.

Clinic instructors include Brittany Weirich, Corie Kerrigan, Kristin Ojaniemi, Lacy Bloedorn, Taylor Bosley and Sarah Greenlund.
