Gladstone vote recount changes only one vote
GLADSTONE — A recount that took place Tuesday resulted in Mike O’Connor gaining one vote in the race for a partial term on Gladstone’s city commission that appeared on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. However, the single vote had no impact on the outcome of the race, and the seat will continue to be held by Steve O’Driscoll in the coming term.
The recount began at 9 a.m. and lasted until 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at Gladstone City Hall. All of the precincts in the city were found to be recountable because the seals on the ballots matched those that were recorded on election night and the number of ballots matched the number of voters recorded Nov. 4.
Each precinct was recounted by hand. The vote that shifted to O’Connor was identified in Precinct 1. There were no changes in the number of votes for any other candidates in either of the city’s two precincts, nor votes cast absentee nor early votes cast at Wells Township Hall during the nine-days of early voting required by state law.
Even with the additional vote, O’Driscoll received roughly 39% of the vote. Steve Viau and Mike O’Connor each received about 29% of the vote, with Viau edging out O’Connor for second place by a fraction of a percent.
According to the Delta County Clerk’s Office, the petition for the recount was filed by O’Connor, who stated there were substantially more votes recorded for the issue of amending the city’s charter to prohibit special assessments than there were recorded for the city commission race. State-certified election results show there were 2,621 votes cast for the amendment question and 2,350 casts for the commission race.
Delta County Clerk Nancy Nancy Przewrocki thanked Gladstone City Clerk Kim Berry; the city’s election inspectors, Erik Buckman, Rhonda Bernson, George Sailer, and Renee Barron; the Delta County Board of Canvassers, John Myers, Sema Deeds, Theresa Nelson and Patty Woerpel; and County Elections Clerk Kylee Hanson for their hard work conducting Tuesday’s recount.
