ESCANABA — Escanaba Public Safety officers battled a fire at the Stonehouse restaurant in Escanaba Saturday morning.

The Escanaba firefighters, along with area township fire departments, braved frigid temperatures to battle the blaze. At the time of the fire, the temperature was 12 degrees F. The Stonehouse is a popular area restaurant located on South Lincoln Road. As a result of its location, the highway was close while firefighters were at the scene and traffic was rerouted.

The fire apparently occurred around 6 a.m. Saturday. An eyewitness said she saw smoke and flames first come through the roof of the building at 6:15 a.m. The first Escanaba Public Safety officers arrived at the scene moments later.

Thick smoke continued to come from the roof of the building as firefighters pumped large amount of water on the building.
