Delta County museum, lighthouse plan open house in days after Christmas
ESCANABA — The two days after Christmas — Thursday, Dec. 26 and Friday, Dec. 27 — the Sand Point Lighthouse, Delta County Historical Society Museum and Delta County Archives will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Though it’s the off-season and the museum and lighthouse are usually closed to sightseers between Labor Day and Memorial Day, the folks at the Historical Society have made a tradition of decorating and opening the grounds for free as a holiday treat.
“The open house is kind of a feel-good time because it’s after the rush and tension of Christmas. … It’s just an enjoyable time,” said Archivist Karen Lindquist.
Prepared inside the cozy lighthouse will be a traditionally-decorated live Christmas tree, cookies and cider. There may be music; not confirmed but possibly appearing may be string musicians or an organist.
People may go up to the top of the lighthouse tower for a view of Sand Point and Little Bay de Noc if the weather permits.
The museum of the Delta County Historical Society contains a number of displays with artifacts and information about bygone eras of the local area.
The museum and archives, dedicated to Dr. John and Mary Beaumier who donated funds to renovate and expand the facility, are attached in the same building that stands at 16 Beaumier Way (alternatively Water Plant Road) just behind the lighthouse.
While the lighthouse and museum will not be open again until May of 2025, the archives are open every Monday between 1 and 4 p.m. for those interested in perusing the collection of local historical records and photographs.
