Social media rumor of harassment at school false
ESCANABA — A rumor spread on social media that male Escanaba Area School students were harassing female students following the election of Donald Trump to serve as the country’s next president is false, according to a letter sent Thursday by the district to families.
“We were recently made aware of a social media post referencing the latest presidential election and stating that males are walking around the school telling females, ‘Your body, my choice.’ We want to be absolutely clear: we have had no reports from students or staff that this type of behavior is occurring. This is a social media rumor, it is false, and it appears to have originated outside our area,” Escanaba Area Schools Superintendent Coby Fletcher wrote in the letter.
The original post, which was widely shared, appears to have originated on the “Delta County Michigan Just The Facts No Bullshit” Facebook page. The page is well known as a liberal counterpart to a conservative page of a similar name, both of which share local and national political content.
“Trending in Escanaba High School today: boys walking around telling the girls, ‘your body, my choice’ over and over. The effects of electing a rapist are immediate and all I can do is cry,” the original post read.
The post was made Wednesday at 3:26 p.m. by an account purportedly owned by a woman who lives in Gladstone. It had been shared 48 times by 3 p.m. Thursday.
The letter sent to parents by Escanaba Area Schools said students could report concerns to their teachers or principals, make confidential reports through a school form, or make confidential reports through the OK2SAY reporting app. Those reports would immediately be investigated by the school and administrators and actions would be taken where necessary.
The letter also said that school staff worked hard to maintain a healthy environment on campus every day.
“Again, I want to emphasize that we have received no reports that this type of behavior is occurring in our schools. Nevertheless, we encourage students to notify us of any concerns using one of the methods above,” the letter concluded.
