Body identified as missing kayaker

MUNISING — The Michigan State Police (MSP) is ending the search for a previously reported missing man. On September 29, 2024, MSP Negaunee Post responded to a report that 65-year-old John Kueber was missing after he was believed to have gone kayaking on Lake Superior. Kueber was last heard from on September 22.

After receiving this information, search efforts for Kueber involved multiple agencies. Despite extensive search efforts, Kueber was not located.

On November 8, troopers were called to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore after hikers spotted a body had washed ashore. The body was not initially able to be identified. Through DNA analysis, MSP has now identified the body as that of the missing man, John Kueber. Foul play is not suspected.

“This is not the outcome any of us were hoping for. We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew Mr. Kueber. We also thank all those who assisted in the search efforts.” said Lt. Ben Eckola.

Kueber’s family has been notified and they are requesting privacy.
