Counselors brought in after Manistique student’s death
MANISTIQUE — Manistique Area Schools is offering access to mental health providers at each of the district’s school buildings following the death of a student.
According to a letter sent to parents Monday, the school’s administrative team was informed Monday morning that emergency medical services responded to a call that the student was unresponsive at their family home. Despite efforts from medical personnel, the student died of what are believed to be natural causes. No foul play is suspected.
The district activated its Crisis Response Plan Monday. As part of the plan, staff met with 6th through 12th grade students in the school’s auditorium and a prepared statement with factual information about the situation was presented. The Mental Health Team from the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District and LMAS was also contacted, bringing mental health providers to each district building to support students, staff, and members of the community.
“We greatly appreciate the support we have already received from within and outside of the community, especially from Michigan State Police, Manistique Public Safety Department, LMAS, and Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District,” Manistique Area Schools Superintendent Kristina M. Hansen wrote in the letter to parents.
Anyone who is struggling with the event is asked to contact the school at 906-341-4300 so they can be connected to mental health support services.
