A sweet time during Maple Weekend

Operations Forester Kile Ziudema explains the workings of the network of interconnected sugar maple trees at the Michigan State University Forestry Innovation Center in Hyde during a tour of the sugarbush on Sunday. The event was part of Maple Weekend, which took place around the state April 5 and 6. While the Forestry Innovation Center demonstrated the sap collection and syrup-making process and sold some products like syrup and maple cream, other Maple Weekend participants like Saunders Point Brewing, Elks Lodge 354 and the Nahma Inn served up food and drink made with maple byproducts — there was a maple syrup-infused brown ale at the brewery, maple-glazed cinnamon rolls at the inn, apple maple pork chops at the lodge and more.
