Reflecting on growth and community spirit

ESCANABA — As winter fades and another busy summer approaches, I find myself reflecting on nearly a decade with Visit Escanaba. This summer will mark my ninth tourism season, and I am filled with immense gratitude for the fantastic journey our community has taken. Delta County continues to grow as a thriving destination, a testament to the resilience, dedication, and warmth of its people.

One of the most striking signs of our progress is the tremendous economic growth we’ve experienced. Since 2018, visitor spending has increased by 60.8%, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s most recent report. Over the past decade, hotel revenues have doubled, fueling further investment in our community. But these numbers are more than just statistics. They reflect the hard work of local business owners, residents, and leaders who have come together to make Delta County a welcoming place for visitors and a prosperous home for those who live here.

The transformation of our county is evident everywhere you look. New restaurants, hotels, and attractions have added fresh energy, with more on the way. These developments don’t just enhance the visitor experience. They improve our quality of life, create jobs, and provide opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to invest in our shared future. Delta County’s growth is driven by people who believe in this place and are committed to shaping its future.

Perhaps nothing embodies our community’s spirit more than the Upper Peninsula State Fair. As the largest event in the U.P., it draws more than 100,000 visitors each year, making Escanaba the most visited place in the region during fair week. The fair’s success is a direct result of the dedication of countless volunteers, organizers, and businesses that come together to showcase what makes the Upper Peninsula special.

Behind every milestone, every new business, and every event is a community that works hard, supports its neighbors, and takes pride in where we live. Many call the Upper Peninsula “God’s country” because of its breathtaking natural beauty, and we are fortunate to call it home; not just for the scenery, but for the people who make this such a special place.

Looking ahead, the future of Delta County is bright. Continued business and community development and expanded tourism amenities position us as an emerging destination, ready to welcome even more visitors while strengthening the foundation for future generations. Our collective efforts have built incredible momentum, and the opportunities ahead are limitless.

To everyone who works tirelessly to grow our economy, strengthen our community, and raise their families here, thank you. Your dedication has made Delta County what it is today.

Let’s continue to celebrate our successes, support one another, and share the unique charm of our home with the world. Together, we’re not just building a destination. We’re creating a legacy of pride, progress, and possibility.
