Treasure City celebrates 40 Years in business

MANISTIQUE – Treasure City, a beloved local retailer, is thrilled to commemorate its 40th anniversary. Since its inception in June 1984, the store has evolved from a small souvenir shop into a vibrant retail destination, offering a diverse range of products from apparel and food to home de,,,,,,,cor and unique gifts.

Originally founded by Bob, Betty, Terry Knoph, and Kathy Skok, Treasure City has been a family-run business and four generations have worked at the store. Even today, Betty, in her 90s, continues to show her dedication to the store by requesting daily updates on its progress. In 2004, ownership transitioned to Kathy Skok and her husband Brian. The store’s continuing success is attributed to the dedicated efforts of Kathy, Debbie Hase and Sherri Toennessen, who have been instrumental in managing the store. Ashley Johnson, Sherri’s daughter, is now a key player in the day-to-day operations of the store. Plus, Brian has been helpful in supporting the business, from maintaining the property to assisting with various tasks.

Over the years, Treasure City has become a popular shopping destination for locals and visitors alike, drawing customers from across Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and the Upper Peninsula. Treasure City’s commitment to providing unique, high-quality products has made it a preferred shopping destination for many customers who return year after year.

Treasure City has also been featured on the Travel Channel and Under the Radar show, further highlighting its unique appeal and drawing national attention.

In recent years, Treasure City has expanded its offerings to include its own label on canned and baked goods, as well as custom gift baskets. Additionally, the business has ventured into new retail spaces with the opening of Traders Bob and True North locations in the Trader’s Point Retail area.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community and customers over the past 40 years,” said Kathy Skok, owner of Treasure City. “We strive to provide a unique shopping experience and offer products that our customers love. By carefully considering factors like cost and uniqueness, we aim to create a store that stands out from the crowd.”
