The wall was formerly part of Kelly’s Ludington Pub, formerly known as “Classmates,” which was destroyed by a Sunday morning fire on Feb. 1, 1998. “The flames had to be at least 30 feet high. I saw them from my house,” said Ruth Heslip, who lived on North 10th Street. “It looked like the whole block was on fire.” No one was in the building at the time of the fire ands there were no injuries associated with the blaze. Much of the firefighting effort was focused on saving the adjacent U.P. State Employees Credit Union once it became apparent the bar was a total loss.
