Hot new snack options rush the home field on game day
According to SNAC International, Americans purchased 107 million pounds of savory snacks for last year’s big game – that’s the equivalent of 15 million Vince Lombardi trophies. Wings and chips are often go-to choices, but a new wave of unexpected dishes may steal the show. From creative takes on old favorites to bold global flavors, these new and surprising snacks will be the star of your game day spread.
The tried and true favorites
Game day wouldn’t feel complete without wings, guac and pizza on the table. These classics have long reigned as the standard fares for the big game and are loved for their ease of preparation and big flavors. Many of these favorites can be made at home or ordered in, making the championship weekend stress free – aside from watching the game itself. However, these crowd favorites face increasing competition from other delicious creations growing in popularity.
New takes on dips and spreads
SNAC International reported a surge in sales for corn chips, tortilla chips, pretzels and potato chips during game day week in 2024. This shows that people still love their crunchy, salty snacks when watching the game, but the key to a successful football game party is to have a good selection of finger foods.
Guacamole and salsa may be traditional chip and dip options, but chili cheese dip and cowboy caviar are trending. Chili cheese dip is an easy and comforting choice that is always devoured by hungry football fans. Made with just three ingredients – cream cheese, a can of chili and shredded cheese – it’s not anything fancy but utterly delicious.
Cowboy caviar is unexpectedly popular, mainly because it is secretly nutritious. This dip is made of beans, corn and other vegetables tossed in a tangy dressing. This zesty and nutritious mix pairs well with tortilla chips or can be enjoyed as a salad. It’s a standout option that offers a fresh alternative to heavier dips and can easily be customized as a great vegan choice.
A whole new level of sweet and savory
There’s no doubt that the big game in New Orleans will keep you on the edge of your seat, and it’s only fitting that the snacks do the same. While sausage rolls may not seem exciting initially, this is a new twist on pigs in a blanket. In this version, apple sausage rolls are made of sausage mixed with caramelized apples wrapped in puff pastry and baked. The sweetness of the apple complements the sausage perfectly.
You’ve probably eaten chicken wings with a can of soda but have you ever thought about combining the two? Coca-Cola chicken wings show that the simplest ingredients can be made into something special. The soda is mixed into a soy sauce-based sauce that coats the chicken wings. The pairing of a sticky, sweet, yet savory glaze with chicken so tender that it falls off the bone will make all the fans go wild.
A new kind of nacho
Nachos made with tortilla chips are standard football food, but there is a new trend in nachos and it switches up the type of chip used. Instead of traditional tortilla chips, potato chips make their way to the sheet pan. Kettle-cooked style chips are topped with Parmesan and freshly cracked pepper for a cacio e pepe type of flavor, and thick-cut wavy potato chips are topped with shredded buffalo chicken, cheese and a dusting of ranch for a fun mashup of football food flavors.
Add a little fun with charcuterie boards
A charcuterie board spread is a great way to impress on game day. Add a football theme or include the colors of the team you’re cheering for to make things extra fun. Include a variety of ingredients so that you have something for everyone to munch on while they dance to Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show. Boards are great to feed a crowd and sneak in a few fruits and veggies for kids on a day that will be short on healthy options.
Candy salad
Candy salad is exactly what it sounds like – a salad made entirely of candy, with no vegetables in sight. It’s a fun dish for parties and is best when you can share it with a group of people. Simply grab a variety of candy – gummies, sour candy, chewy ropes and clusters all work well, there is no bad addition to candy salad – and add it all to a big bowl like a salad. Serve with a scoop and watch for smiles – kids love it, and so do the adults.
International flavors steal the limelight
According to Reuters, the 2024 game attracted 210 million viewers, and this year is expected to draw a similar crowd. It’s no surprise that fans draw inspiration from their cultural backgrounds, incorporating flavors from around the world into traditional game day spreads. One popular option is the Korean-style corn dog, which is typically filled with cheese and sausage and coated with rice flour dough. It also comes with fun toppings like panko breadcrumbs, sugar or potatoes and is served with various sauces, like spicy mayo and honey mustard.
Birria, in any form, is also growing in popularity. Beef is cooked low and slow with traditional spices, and you’re left with shredded beef and a rich and flavorful consome to dip in birria quesadillas or tacos. You’ll also see birria nachos topped with plenty of cheese. Add acidity with pickled jalapenos or red onions – this rich dish needs it.
Miniature handhelds are taking over
Mini-sized snacks are all the rage, allowing guests to enjoy a little bit of everything on the table without filling up too fast. Take buffalo chicken sliders; these two-bite sandwiches feature layers of tender buffalo chicken and white American cheese between sweet rolls and topped with ranch butter. They pack a flavorful punch and are easy to handle during the game. Cheeseburger, cheesesteak, pizza and Italian grinders are other popular slider options.
Elevate your game day spread
Game day fare has come a long way, now featuring a variety of options to satisfy every palate. From cowboy caviar and apple sausage rolls to potato-covered corn dogs, there’s something for everyone. Whether hosting a party or attending one, when you bring your snack game with items beyond the usual wings and guacamole, it’s your turn to score.
