Snowshoeing event in Schoolcraft County Feb. 8
MANISTIQUE — The Environmental Education Lab’s annual Super Saturday Snowshoe event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. This free event is for people of all ages, and there will be snowshoes on hand to borrow, loaned by the Manistique Area Schools. If there is not much snow, the public is still encouraged to come out and enjoy hiking on the trails. Trail maps will be available, and the restroom is open.
The event has been held for about 15 years. Snow depths and temperatures have varied from one year to the next, but it has always been enjoyable for participants. Every year some participants comment that they did not even know the trails were there. The Environmental Education Lab had its original grand opening in August of 1994. Additional trails were added during the past five years. Truly a community effort, a sign near the entrance of the Lab lists many of the groups who have donated finances and volunteer work over the years. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities at the the Lab, contact Heidi Troyer at 906-341-2965.
The Environmental Education Lab is located on 80 acres at the end of Krummich Road in Manistique Township. From US-2 turn north onto the River Road, go one mile and turn left on Krummich Road (where the big powerline crosses). After one mile, Krummich takes a sharp left. Continue on Krummich to the Lab parking area. More information is available on the Lab’s Facebook page @EELabManistique. The Lab is always open for hiking and snowshoeing.
