Event honors Martin Luther King, Jr.
KINGSFORD — The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. continues to be an inspiration to many Americans and to people around the world. He sought to build “the beloved community,” in which people of all races and creeds could live together in mutual harmony and respect. A U.P. group is inviting the public to celebrate King’s life and legacy at the Third Annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration. It will be held on Sunday, Jan. 19, from 2-3 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 395 Hamilton Avenue, Kingsford, Michigan. A nursery will be provided.
The event is being sponsored by the local group Christians for Racial Understanding: Community for All (CRU:CA). Young and old alike are invited to come and enjoy a few of the freedom songs and hymns of the Civil Rights Movement, including a solo by noted local mezzo-soprano Lorna March. There will be a song by children, as well as art and a short drama by teens.
The “speaker” will be Martin Luther King himself as his “Letter to American Christians” is read. King’s words will challenge hearers to pursue justice and equality out of love for God and our neighbor. Afterwards there will be refreshments and an opportunity to mingle.
“The message of Dr. King, rooted in faith and expressed in love, is as relevant as ever in 2025,” said Rev. Ed Laarman, the Coordinator of CRU:CA. “We hope that you can join us on the eve of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Holiday to remember and celebrate this amazing man, and the ideals for which he lived and died.”
