Soup and chili cook-off set for March 1

ROCK — The Rock Lions Club will host its first Soup or Chili Challenge on Saturday, March 1. The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at the Rock Lions Club, located at 14454 M-35 in Rock.

Those interested in competing in the event are asked to call Amy at 906-280-1417 or Theresa at 906-241-8566. Prizes will be awarded for both the soup and chili categories.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Mid Peninsula Wolverine Circuit Breakers FIRST Robotics Team #7782.

Democrats to meet

ESCANABA — The Delta Dems are hosting a speaker and discussion as part of their general meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the USW Hall, 1201 Sheridan Road, Escanaba. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. New members and guests are welcome.

ESCANABA — St. Thomas Church will hold a breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 2 from 9 a.m to 12:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Benefit for Hass family

ESCANABA — A pancake breakfast with a bake sale and basket raffles will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the USW Local 21 Union Hall to 4-year-old benefit the family of Harlow Jane Hass, who underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor on Jan. 28.

Harlow is the daughter of power boiler operator Jake Hass and his wife Justina. She was diagnosed with the large tumor after experiencing headaches and balance changes. She is expected to have a long recovery following her all-day surgery.

The event is open to the public with a free-will donation.

The hall is located at 1201 Sheridan Road in Escanaba. Deliveries to the Escanaba paper mill will begin at 6:30 a.m. and can be made by calling  906-786-1846.
