Michigan authorities identify drowning victim

August 13, 2014

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Ottawa County authorities say a man whose body was found in the Grand River is a 40-year-old Grand Rapids man reported missing last month.

Ottawa County sheriff's Capt. Mark Bennett said Tuesday that dental records identified Anthony Welch. Kayakers found his body on July 20. Investigators believe Welch was in the water for several days.

Bennett says Welch's family reported him missing to Grand Rapids Police on July 11. Bennett earlier said Welch didn't have identification on him.

A forensic autopsy shows Welch accidentally drowned. There were no signs of traumatic injury.
