ESCANABA - Dock and pier expansions continue to progress at an Escanaba shipyard which received support from city council Thursday to use adjacent bottomland for boats to moor in Little Bay de Noc.
Basic Marine, Inc., at 440 N. 10th St., is extending its dock and pier in the bay and plans to dredge to accommodate larger ships to the area. The company needed council's support to apply for a conveyance permit from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
"Once the permit is acquired, a fee must be paid such that we are 'renting' the bottomland adjacent to the dock," explained Mark Cousineau, representative of Basic Marine, in a letter to council.
The area which Basic Marine is applying for the permit is about 312 feet long and extends 70 feet out into the lake, he added.
Construction on the dock project began this spring. Steel sheet pilings were put in place along the shoreline to extend the existing dock to about 1,400 feet.
Infrastructure will be installed on the land southwest of the dock including electric, storm sewer, regular sewer, and a natural gas line. There are also plans to extend the railroad track into this area.
The project also includes a 450-foot existing pier, somewhat parallel to the dock, to be extended another 780 feet to where the old wooden piers can be seen sticking out of the bay. The wooden pilings will be encased and filled in to accommodate for the additional pier length.
Following completion of the dock and pier extensions, Basic Marine will dredge in a seven-acre area between the dock and pier and in a 12-acre area north of the pier.
Last year, council approved a tax abatement for Basic Marine for a 50 percent reduction in taxes for 12 years for its seawall development.
According to its website, Basic Marine constructs new ships and repairs vessels. Dry-docking is available for marine repairs. Basic Towing, Inc. offers towing services. Basic Marine currently has more than 2,000 feet of dockside space and 74,000 square feet of fully-equipped fabrication, ship, and warehouse facilities.
