GLADSTONE - Bernice M. DeHooghe, 96, formerly of Fairview Manor in Gladstone, passed away peacefully Friday evening, June 6, 2014, at Christian Park Village in Escanaba.
Bernice was born Dec. 11, 1917, in Escanaba, the daughter of Steven and Matilda (DeMarsh) Carriere. She was raised in Gladstone and attended the Gladstone schools. Bernice was united in marriage to Ernie DeHooghe, longtime plumber and Gladstone business owner, at All Saints Catholic Church. Together Bernice and Ernie made their home, raised their family and spent their entire lives, in Gladstone. Ernie preceded Bernice in death in 1982. Bernice was a devout member of All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone. She was well known in the local community for her love of children. Throughout the years, Bernice enjoyed taking care of many families, and their children, whom fondly remember her loving care. Additionally, Bernice enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, at Fairview Manor in Gladstone. She will be deeply missed.
Survivors include: three daughters, Melanie Sullivan of Montana, Kathy Viau of Rapid River, Mich., and Sharon "Pudge" Foster of Wisconsin. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Steven and Matilda; her loving husband, Ernie; Infant son, Steven Peter DeHooghe; two daughters, Jeanne and Dianne; granddaughter, Stephanie Viau; three brothers, William, Steven Jr., and Clarence "Clancy" Carriere; sister, LaVern Smith.
Bernice's family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.
Mass of Christian Burial services will follow visiting hours on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at All Saints Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Luncheon will follow in the All Saints Church Parish Hall. Bernice will be laid to rest in the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.
