MANISTIQUE - Pitching and defense were solid for the Rapid River Rockets Monday as they posted 7-1 and 9-1 softball victories over the Manistique Emeralds.
Rapid River senior Savannah Stenlund tossed a pair of three-hitters. She struck out 15 and walked four in the opener, then fanned 12 and walked two in the second game.
"Savannah threw well in both games," said Rockets' manager George Kanyuh. "She had command of her pitches tonight. This was a very good performance for her."
Rhiley Hubert had two hits and scored twice in the opener and Hannah Kanyuh ripped a two-run single to put the Rockets up 5-1 in the sixth inning.
"That was a timely hit by Hannah," said manager Kanyuh. "That gave us some more breathing room. We didn't have any errors in either game. We played well in both games."
In the nightcap, Hubert collected four hits and scored twice and Aslynn Brockway added a pair of hits, including a two-run double in a six-run fourth.
"Rhiley got on base, which is her job as our leadoff hitter," said manager Kanyuh. "Aslynn's double was a very timely hit. That kind of opened the floodgates and we started hitting."
Rapid River's Kendyl Miller finished the scoring on a solo home run over the leftfield fence in the seventh.
"Everybody is starting to come together with the bats and the gloves toward the end of the year," said manager Kanyuh.
The Rockets (13-12) travel to Superior Central for a doubleheader Thursday at 4 p.m. The Emeralds visit Westwood for a twinbill Wednesday at 4.
