ESCANABA - An Escanaba man, who was drunk when he rolled his vehicle over and struck a parked truck in an Escanaba neighborhood this winter, was sentenced this week in Delta County Circuit Court.
Steven Ray Smith, 26, of 1316 11th Ave. S., Escanaba, pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while license suspended - second or subsequent offense, possession of a controlled substance/analogues, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Smith was sentenced to seven months in jail on the license violation, five months in jail on the controlled substance violation, and 63 days for drunken driving. He was given credit for 63 days already served in the county jail.
The charges stem from a crash on Feb. 26 when Smith was driving a Jeep on the 800 block of 3rd Avenue South at 10 p.m. and the vehicle hit a snowbank, went airborne, flipped over, and hit the front end of a pickup parked at a residence. The truck was owned by Tim Kobasic of Escanaba.
Smith fled the scene of the accident. Shortly after, Escanaba Public Safety apprehended him nearby.
Smith was injured in the accident and was taken by ambulance to OSF St. Francis Hospital where he was treated and then later lodged in jail. Two male passengers in the Jeep were not injured in the crash, said police.
Prior to the rollover, Escanaba Public Safety was on the lookout for a careless driver reported earlier that evening.
In addition to the concurrent jail terms, Smith was ordered this week to pay $798 in fines and costs. His drivers license will be suspended for 30 days and restricted for 150 days.
