Escanaba resident Michael Sattem, at left, is sworn into office by Escanaba City Clerk Bob Richards following his appointment to city council Thursday. Sattem will temporarily serve on council until the next general municipal election in November 2015. He fills the seat vacated by Leo Evans who recently resigned.
Council approved the temporary appointment of Sattem in a 3-1 vote with council member Ralph Blasier voting no. James Hellerman was also seeking the vacant seat.
Both candidates were questioned by council members during Thursday's regular meeting prior to a motion to appoint Sattem.
During questioning, Sattem said he sees the council seat as "a great opportunity to work with other council members and keep the community the great community it is."
He added, "I'd like to see the community to continue to be a great place, a safe place to raise a family."
As a council member, Sattem said he offers experience in working in a people-orientated business with a varied public.
For the past 13 years, he has been the head brewer and a manager at Hereford and Hops Brewpub where he has created award-winning beers and worked with budgets, employees, marketing, and scheduling.
His education includes a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a minor in sociology from Western Michigan University.
Sattem fills a seat previously held by Evans, who served on council for 18 years. Evans stated in his resignation letter that he was resigning due to an upcoming issue. Council accepted his resignation at its April 3 meeting.
