GWINN - U.P. Pink Power Team started off in 2005 with a group of women from Gwinn to raise funds so they could participate in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in Chicago. Their goal was to raise money for breast cancer research.
After participating in the Avon walk for many years, the group deemed it necessary to disband because of life events.
In comes the New U.P. Pink Power Team that took over in 2011. The "new" group decided to change it up somewhat and raise money, not only for breast cancer, but all forms of cancer and diseases.

Ann Christiansen, a member of the U.P. Pink Power Team, shows off just some of the Pink Power clothing and other items that are available for purchase in support of breast cancer research.
"We have found that many people are willing to donate, but they just are not sure where or to whom to donate and feel very comfortable with donating funds to our group and letting up 'pay it forward,'" said Ann Christiansen, a member of the U.P. Pink Power Team.
The group conducts one main fund-raiser a year - an annual 17-Mile Walk-A-Thon from Tall Timbers in Gwinn to Gary's Knotty Pine in Arnold, held each year in April. This year the event will be held on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 9 a.m.
The group also hosts a Bike Night held in July at The Throttle Bar & Grill in Little Lake, Paint the Throttle Pink held in November, and then a Sled Night in February.
In 2013, the Team, with 97 walkers, raised a total of $13,000. The proceeds will be used to purchase defibrillators for area volunteer fire departments and townhalls.
Along with these events, the Team sells U.P. Pink Power clothing in two locations - Split Endz in Gwinn and The Throttle in Little Lake.
"By selling clothing, we are able to 'pay it forward' and donate to worthy causes in the area," Christiansen added.
