The barge Great Lakes Trader made its way into Little Bay de Noc in Escanaba Tuesday morning, following a path cut by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay. Above, the tug Joyce L. Van Enkevort, which pushes the Great Lakes Trader, prepares to disengage from the notch. Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes were down 37 percent in January compared to last year, according to data from the Lake Carriers’ Association, which represents 17 American companies operating U.S.-flag vessels on the Great Lakes. Only the port of Escanaba increased its shipments from 117,310 net tons in January 2013 to 402,555 tons in January 2014.
