HILLSDALE - Catherine (Murray) Baker, 64, of Hillsdale, formerly of Spalding, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

She was the daughter of Gloria and Bill Asselin, and the late Girard (Dage) Murray.

She graduated from North Central High School in 1967 and from Northern Michigan University in 1971 with a degree in teaching and business.

She and her husband owned and operated Gelzers furniture and hardware stores in Hillsdale, where Catherine was the manager of the furniture store for many years. She had great taste in design and bought beautiful furniture and accessories as a buyer for the store.

She loved to cook and assembled several hundred cookbooks in her home. Her favorite saying was "If you find even one recipe in a book, it was worth the price of the book."

Catherine will be greatly missed in Hillsdale, where she was very active in the community.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Grant; two sisters, Liz Murray of Chandler, Ariz., and Ann Marie (Mark) Rappette of Green Bay, Wis.; two brothers, Rick (Sally) of Green Bay and Tom Murray (special friend Nancy Gatien) of Hermansville. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Catherine was preceded in death by an infant brother, Girard Jr.

A memorial service for Catherine (Murray) Baker will be held in the spring at St. John Neuman Church in Spalding.
