The children attending the special Altrusa led Story Hour at the Escanaba Public Library on Nov. 2 found a new use for fallen leaves. After listening to the picture book "Leaf Man," illustrated by Lois Ehlert, and using their imaginations, they created figures out of autumn leaves, acorns, and twigs. Children's librarian Patt Fittante introduced the Altrusans, Frances Michaels, Judy Owens, and Sharyn Deuel, who read several fall themed stories, gave guidance with the art project, and served snacks to a roomful of busy youngsters.
A little glue. some pretty leaves and a little imagination are all these youngsters need to create a pretty picture.
Members of Altrusa were assisted by volunteer Whitney O’Dell and student helpers Isabella Wessel and Gabriella Beavais. The Altrusa Club of Escanaba serves their community in many ways, especially in the area of literacy. Volunteering in Head Start Classrooms, providing free Book Boxes throughout the community, and supporting the public libraries are just a few of their projects.
