‘Venison Project’ underway

October 16, 2013

GLADSTONE - Memorial United Methodist Church is set to begin its annual venison project. The Missions Committee is gearing up for the 22nd consecutive year of providing ground venison for the local Salvation Army Food Pantry, and the Detroit Cass Ave. United Methodist Church Kitchen for the Poverty Stricken.

In 2012, the committee members collected, processed, and distributed about 1,000 pounds of ground venison. Since the Venison Project was born in 1986 with the urging of Memorial member, the late Barb Nemacheck, about 10 tons of venison have been provided for food pantries both locally and in Detroit.

With the fall hunting season in progress, hunters are being asked to take advantage of the opportunity to help those who are in need of food. By field dressing their deer, they can then deliver it to either Steve Soderman's Meat Processing at 6207 Days River Road, Brampton, or Viau's Market at 1519 Sheridan Road, Escanaba. Donors should be sure to designate the venison to the Memorial United Methodist Church (Gladstone) Venison Project.

In this 2007 photo, Major Bill Cox, former officer of the Escanaba Salvation Army, accepts one of four boxes filled with 250 pounds of ground venison from Alice Butch, coordinator of the Memorial United Methodist Church’s Venison Project. Area hunters are urged to donate their deer to the Gladstone church for distribution to the Salvation Army Food Pantry and an inner-city church in Detroit.

The Whitetails have provided funding to pay for any processing fees. There is no charge to the hunter. Once collected, volunteers deliver the professionally processed ground and frozen venison to the food pantries.
