Howard W. Olsen

BAY VIEW - Howard W. Olsen, of Bay View, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette. He was born March 19, 1947, in Escanaba and was the son of Walter and Selma (Strom) Olsen. Howard graduated from Escanaba High School, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and then worked and retired from the Holly Corporation. Howard enjoyed challenging projects and was creative in figuring unique ways to solve problems.

He was meticulous with the rebuilding and modifying of old, rusty vehicles. Howard enjoyed attending UPIR stock car racing events and never missed a race. He also loved working in his yard, gardening and was an avid reader. Howard will be remembered as a loving son, brother, uncle, companion and faithful friend. He loved all animals, especially dogs.

Howard W. Olsen is survived by his loving companion, Carol Ready; sisters, Caryl (Charles) Thompson of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Alda Sopher of Menomonee Falls; nephews, Eric Sopher of LaCrosse, Wis., Marc (Jackie) Sopher of Ford River, Stephen (Kathleen) Thompson of Los Angeles, Scott (Vineetha) Thompson of Parkland, Fla.; niece, Susan (Preston) Woody of Kingston, Tenn.; great nephew, Dylan Thompson; great niece, Ella Thompson; cousins, David (Susan) Westermann, Carl (Tara) Westermann, Ken, Stephen and Kevin Anderson, Marylee Malinoff, John Langworthy.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law Donald Sopher.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the Anderson Funeral Home fellowship area in Escanaba. During that time refreshments and light hors d' oeuvres will be served. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the Delta County Animal Shelter. Envelopes will be available at the Anderson Funeral Home.
