MANISTIQUE - A group of four kayakers were found safe after a three-hour search for them on the Manistique River Saturday, according to the Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Office.

Three adult kayakers and a 9-year-old boy had put in at the Merwin Creek landing about noon that day. A search team was formed when they failed to show up that evening. The group was later located about a mile from the Wyman Nursery in Manistique.

Assisting at the scene were Manistique Public Safety, Michigan State Police, Sault Tribe Public Safety, Michigan DNR, and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter that was in the area. Family members and other volunteers also aided in the search.
