Ken Schell of Gladstone shows off his trophy after becoming the U.P. Open Chess Champion for 2013. The tournament was held in Marquette at the Masonic Temple in mid-August. A well-known chess player in the local area, Schell has been involved in the game for 60 years. He feels he won the title by a stroke of luck, saying that he is fortunate that he didn't have to play two weeks later because he "might have lost." Because more and more chess champions are younger in recent years, Schell, who is 72 years old, said this year's win could very well be his last. Anyone interested in competitive chess can check out the Lake Superior Chess Association's website.
