ESCANABA - A few Escanaba Eskymos collected their first varsity victories and Escanaba held off the Marquette Redettes 5-3 in their season tennis opener Wednesday at Ludington Park and Escanaba High School.

"The team played hard and gained some valuable experience today," said Eskymos coach Dennis Lueneberg. "It's still early with much more tennis to be played and even more to learn about the game, but I'm encouraged after watching how they competed and represented themselves on the courts."

There were some tight matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Johanna Snowden and Anna Burch competed through three sets, but the Redettes' Madalyne Connen and Laura Slavsky prevailed. Emily LaFave fought hard at No. 4 forcing tiebreakers in both of her sets but succumbed 7-6, 7-5 to Taylor Swajanen.
