GLADSTONE - Alger and Mary Strom celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary while hiking on the north shore of Lake Superior near Grand Marais, Minn.

Alger of Gladstone and the former Mary Brdardic of Escanaba were married May 30, 1953, in the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. They had three children: a son, David, who passed away in 2011; a son, Kenneth of Arizona; and a daughter, Kim Wanke of South Carolina. They have one grandson, Rodger Wanke.

Alger graduated from Gladstone High School in 1951 and Mary from Escanaba High School in 1952. They lived in Anchorage, Alaska while Alger served in the U.S. Army during 1954-56.

Both spent their working days in downstate Michigan. Alger retired as city attorney for Pontiac and Mary retired after working for the Waterford School District and providing private tutoring of sign language primarily in foster home care settings.
