Waino B. Salo Sr.

RAPID RIVER - Waino B. Salo Sr., 84, formerly of 9140 LL Road, Rapid River, Mich., (Nahma) passed away Jan. 21, 2013, at OSF St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford, Ill. He was born June 29, 1928, in Eben Junction, Mich., and was the son of Frank and Milia (Ross) Salo. Waino graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in agriculture. Waino B. Salo, Sr. married the former Mary Ann Kocot on Oct. 22, 1955, in Standish, Mich., and she preceded him in death on July 9, 2009. Waino worked in sales for over 32 years with the New Holland Farm Equipment Company.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, building things, watching and coaching sports. He was an avid Michigan State basketball fan. Waino had a love for his Finnish heritage which included his love for playing the accordion. Family was extremely important to Waino and he was a loving and compassionate man. Waino's motto was "Be positive and keep smiling!" Waino and Mary Ann Salo moved from Grand Ledge, Mich., to Nahma in 1994.

Waino B. Salo Sr. is survived by sons, Waino (Carol) Salo Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, and Frank Salo of Holt, Mich.; daughter, Tina (Bill) Roy of Rockford, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Corina, Wil, Westin, Celina, Tyler, Augustina, Rochelle and Daniel; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham, Mich. Memorial funeral services celebrating the life of Waino B. Salo, Sr. will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Sion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Kelto and Rev. Leslie Niemi officiating. Burial will take place in the Chatham Cemetery. A luncheon will be served following the burial services in the Sion Lutheran Church fellowship hall. Memorials can be directed to the Nahma Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the Anderson Funeral Home or at the church the day of the service.
