ESCANABA - Altrusa International Inc. of Escanaba conducted an initiation on June 10 at Ferdinand's to welcome Sharyn Deuel as its newest member. Sponsors Dannielle Herbert and Frances Michaels introduced Deuel to the Altrusa club when she and her husband, Lynn, moved to Escanaba from the Grand Rapids area several months ago.
Accepting her membership pin, Deuel gave her reasons for joining Altrusa. "I wanted to become active in my new community and to meet people," she said. "I was impressed with the variety of services that Altrusans participate in and the friendliness of its members. After coming to meetings and service projects as a visitor I knew I wanted to become a part of Altrusa myself."
Deuel is a recently retired elementary school teacher with a special love for sharing reading and books with children. Altrusa's literacy outreach was one of the things that attracted her to Altrusa. She has been a frequent volunteer reader with Altrusa at both Gladstone and Escanaba Libraries during Children's Story programs this past year.
Sharyn Deuel, center, was recently initiated as the newest member of Altrusa International Inc. of Escanaba. She is pictured at an initiation ceremony with President Judy Owens and sponsor Frances Michaels.
She has also been keeping the bookshelves at the local laundromats stocked with donated books as part of Altrusa's Community Book Box Project.
Deuel will be serving as co-chair for both the Literacy and the Service committees of Altrusa for 2013-14.
Altrusa's motto is "Leading to a Better Community" and after 53 years, Altrusa of Escanaba continues to invest time, talent, and resources in our community by working together.
