Escanaba’s smoke-free parks healthy for residents

EDITOR:

While May quickly comes to a close, summer springs into action. Local residents and visitors look forward to fun-filled, outdoor activities while enjoying the U.P.'s fresh, crisp, clean air and beautiful landscape. As a health educator and Escanaba resident, I am thankful for and supportive of the city of Escanaba's Smoke-Free Parks Ordinance, which has significantly limited undesirable exposure to second-hand smoke in local, outdoor recreational areas.

Keep up the progressive, proactive work Escanaba. You lead by example, and our community is healthier because of Escanaba's Smoke-Free Ordinance. Thank you.

The harmful effects of smoking and second-hand smoke exist year round and can potentially last a lifetime.

May is Asthma Awareness Month and a good time to remind everyone that environmental triggers, such as smoke and second-hand smoke, may contribute to the onset or exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Please quit and avoid exposure (or exposing others) to second-hand smoke whenever possible. Concerned citizens, please continue to support our Smoking Cessation and Tobacco Awareness Programs.

Enjoy a happy and healthy summer.
