STOCKTON, Calif. - Ron and Janet Weldum celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends on March 30 in Ripon, Calif., near their home in Stockton. Ron and the former Janet Makela were married on March 30, 1963 in Rock.
Ron, son of Albert and Selma Weldum, attended Rock High School where he met and fell in love with Janet, daughter of Nicky and Nellie Kivioja also of Rock. Ron graduated from high school in 1958 and Janet in 1960. Ron attended Michigan Technological University where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1963. Janet worked as a nurse's aid at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba until her marriage.
As a child, Ron worked at the local bowling alley and cheese factory and became an avid hunter and fisherman, making extra money trapping on his father's land. Janet worked on the family farm, milking cows and playing in the woods. Her favorite memories are watching the animals and enjoying nature.

Immediately after their marriage, the couple honeymooned on Route 66 to California where Ron had a job waiting for him with the California Division of Highways (currently known as Cal Trans). During his career, Ron worked for the California Division of Highways, the City of Stockton, owned his own engineering company and worked for a private developer. He ultimately retired from the City of Stockton and is currently enjoying hunting and fishing, working part time to assist with engineering projects in the community, and spending time with family and friends.
Janet worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton as a nurse's aid for many years and at the local elementary school cafeteria where her children attended school. She is an avid homemaker, gardener, crafter and bird watcher, and has a chicken coop, which supplies the family with many fresh organic eggs.
The Weldums are the parents of a daughter, Sheila (Glenn) Ross of Stockton, born in 1965, and a son Larry, born in 1967. Larry died in an automobile accident in 1988.
They also have a grandson, Steven Weldum, who served for four years in the U.S. Army and returned from Afghanistan to his home in Stockton in March.
Ron and Janet are spending their retirement years enjoying life by hunting, fishing, their 4-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, "Chevy", gardening, crafting and spending time with family and friends.
They travel back to Rock on a regular basis to visit with family and friends and recall cherish memories from their childhood.
