MARQUETTE The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association met on Wednesday in Marquette to elect the 2012-13 All-U.P. Girls' dream team, and while this year's team doesn't feature a single senior, it still lives up to the title in every way.

They are fronted by the AP Class D Player of the Year, Forest Park's Lexi Gussert. The 6-foot junior received her second consecutive Player of the Year award after receiving the honor in her sophomore year as well. She averaged 32 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, four steals, and four blocks per game, leading the Lady Trojans to a 24-2 record and falling in the playoffs only to the St. Ignace Saints on their path to the state title.

She has been recruited by a multitude of colleges, some of which include Division I schools like Michigan State, Tennessee, and Connecticut.

State champion Kelly Wright of St. Ignace was also elected. The 5-foot-10 junior was a part of the undefeated Saints team that moved to Class D this year, ran the table and proved that they are one of the best teams in Michigan.

Wright averaged 19.6 points and 7.2 boards per game for St. Ignace. She is the Straits Area Player of the Year, and was arguably the best player on a very talented Championship team.

The team is rounded out by Vanessa Freberg of the Superior Central Cougars.

"She is one of the best players on one of the top teams in the state," said Cougars coach Greg Trowbridge last week. "And she is also the ultimate team player. Even when she has open looks, she often defers to a teammate, because she would rather see teammates succeed."

Success is something Freberg has made a career out of, claiming the position of all-time leading scorer in Superior Central girls' basketball history. Heading into her senior year, Freberg has 1,060 points, and she averaged 17.5 points, 9.4 rebounds, and four steals during the 2012-13 season. She is also the Central U.P. Conference's Most Valuable Player and was selected to the Class D All-State team.

Elisa Jermu of the Houghton Gremlins claimed one of the guard positions on the Dream Team. Jermu is also the Class ABC Player of the Year and Co-West PAC Conference' Most Valuable Player. She averaged 19.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and two steals per game.

Marquette is represented by Hunter Viitala, a 5-foot-8 sophomore. She is the Great Northern Conference Player of the Year, putting up a total of 351 points over the course of the season. Viitala's per game average was 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.
