MANISTIQUE - The annual CBC Fund Drive in Schoolcraft County has officially kicked off with many events slated from now until the end of March.
This year marks the 46th year of the CBC community fundraiser, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, Bay Cliff Health Camp and community charities.
According to one of the three CBC co-chairs, Victoria George, this year's community charities are split between the Manistique Senior Center/Schoolcraft County on Aging and the Coalition for Safe and Stable Housing.
"The money stays in the county and is used to help people within the county with health-related issues," said George, noting the CBC committee has approximately 30 people who volunteer their time to the efforts, in addition to many local businesses lending their support.
The community will host a slew of events throughout February and into March, culminating with the annual telethon on Sunday, March 24, known as CBC Sunday.
"We're looking to make $48,000 this year," said George, noting last year's $47,000 goal was reached and even exceeded.
Some businesses have opted to donate a portion of their sales from CBC Sunday to the CBC Fund Drive, while some groups and businesses are involved in activities such as penny wars, casual dress days at work or school, and selling CBC smiley faces and ribbons.
One of the first CBC events, which took place last weekend was a euchre tournament and soup cook-off at the Eagles Club.
Another event takes place this weekend - the Marley's Celebrity Bartenders & Auction held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Marley's Bar & Grill in Manistique.
"We have people from the community that bartend that day," said George. "A portion of the receipts are donated to CBC."
Many people and businesses within the county have donated items for the auction portion of the event.
Some of the other upcoming CBC events include:

"CBC is an amazing fundraiser where many dedicated individuals from the community come together and volunteer their time and places of business to make CBC a success," said George. "If it wasn't for all the people who put on the special events and telethon, we would not be able to raise the amount we do. And for that, I am thankful for everyone involved and everyone who supports CBC. It is astonishing what a community our size can do."
