October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 12, 2011
Daily Press

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Alliance Against Violence and Abuse, Inc. would like to spread the word about this delicate issue among our entire community.

Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects as many as 1 in 4 women in our country. It can happen to anyone at anytime at any point in their lives. Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors by an intimate partner.

The one and only purpose of domestic violence is to gain complete control over another person. This can be done in many forms such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, and stalking.

Please help stop domestic violence. If you or someone you know is being abused the Alliance Against Violence and Abuse, Inc. can help. It offers 24-hour emergency assistance to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, temporary food and shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, supportive counseling, support groups for women and children, information and referrals, court support and help filing personal protection orders. To contact the Alliance, please call our business line at 906-789-9207 or the 24-hour crisis line at 906-789-1166 or toll free at 1-800-682-1649.
