ESCANABA - The mentor held the upper hand over his pupil Friday as Iron Mountain recorded an impressive playoff football victory.

IM crushed Calumet 48-12 in the Division 6 contest at Calumet. IM coach Scott Boddy is a former Calumet head coach, and one of his assistants then, John Croze, is now Calumet's head coach.

Josh Pender scored four touchdowns for IM, highlighted by a 75-yard kickoff return to open the second half. Quarterback Bill Boddy added TD runs of 50 and 53 yards. That duo combined to run for 221 of IM's 360 rushing yards.

Calumet, which lost turnovers on its opening two possessions, collected 285 yards. Nate Sturos, the U.P. Class A-B-C quarterback, was held to zero yards on 10 carries.

In Division 5, Ishpeming pounded neighboring Westwood 38-0 as quarterback Daniel Olson ran for 136 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

The Hemtites held Westwood quarterback to three pass completions and 14 yards in 15 attempts by playing a 4-1-6 defense.

Two other Upper Peninsula teams were also eliminated from the playoffs Friday.

In Division 7, top-ranked Traverse City St. Francis walloped Rudyard 54-8 to set up a meeting with Ishpeming. In Division 8, Johannesburg-Lewiston edged St. Ignace 30-27.
