Road rage leads to felonious assault charge

By Jenny Lancour
POSTED: November 6, 2009

ESCANABA - An Escanaba man was lodged in Delta County Jail following a road rage incident where he allegedly took a gun out of his trunk and threatened another driver Thursday, said Escanaba Public Safety officials.

It appeared the two drivers were eastbound on U.S. 2 approaching Escanaba when the suspect's vehicle passed the victim's car and then slowed in front of him, said Public Safety Director Al O'Dell this morning.

The victim, a 22-year-old male from Escanaba, then passed the suspect who then again passed the victim, according to the police report. O'Dell did not think the two men knew each other.

When the two vehicles arrived at the intersection at the 1500 block of Ludington, the suspect got out of his car and took a shotgun out of his trunk, allegedly threatening the victim. The suspect then got back into his car and drove to a residence on Stephenson Avenue with the victim following him, O'Dell said.

After parking at the home, the suspect went back into his trunk and pulled out the shotgun and allegedly swung the firearm at the victim, who was out of his vehicle. The victim ducked and was not hit by the gun. The two then got into a physical fight, said O'Dell.

While police were driving to the scene, the suspect fled in a car which was found in a nearby alley. Police searched for the suspect and apprehended him within 10 minutes of the local emergency call.

The suspect was lodged in Delta County Jail on a charge of felonious assault and is expected to be arraigned today in district court. O'Dell said no shots were ever fired in the incident and no one was injured.

Earlier, when the vehicles were traveling on U.S. 2, the victim had made a 9-1-1 call regarding a reckless driver on the highway. The call was dispatched to Menominee County. When he made a second emergency call about a subject with a gun in downtown Escanaba, the call was dispatched to Delta County.

Delta County sheriff's deputies assisted public safety officers at the scene.
