Get out and vote on Tuesday
On Tuesday, residents in several local communities will be asked to make selections for leaders of their respective cities. The two biggest contests will be three seats on Escanaba City Council and three seats on the Gladstone City Commission.
Five candidates are trying for each position with three incumbents facing two newcomers in each locale. This is good to see. Not because the incumbents are doing a bad job, but because it shows people are interested in their government.
Far too often, we hear of people complaining about how government does not do this or that for them. Most of the time when asked, these same people say they did not even take the time to go out to vote. A better line yet is why bother, it doesn't matter.
Well, it does matter. There are not many places in this world where a free election is held. Look at the mess that has taken place in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. These so-called free elections have been marred with people trying to fix the outcomes.
This is the difference between our country and the rest of the world. Yes, we may not always get to see the best people elected, but when their term is up, we have the option of voting them out of office. This is a right that our armed services fight to protect every day for us.
No matter how many shortcomings you may see in this country or in this state, or even in your city, remember, what takes place on Tuesday is our right and we should exercise it. Let your voice be heard and go to the polls and vote for who you think will be the best leaders of our cities.
They may not win, but at least you made your voice heard and that is what democracy is all about. Remember, it could come down to your vote on whether your candidate wins or not. Remember, please vote on Tuesday.
