Stephenson suffocates Cedarville

ESCANABA - The Stephenson Eagles made a huge defensive statement Saturday as they earned a trip to Bark River-Harris this week for a district championship football game.

The Eagles overpowered Cedarville 24-0 in a Division 8 opener. Cedarville did not get a first down and was limited to a total of 36 yards in offense, including a negative 19 in the second half.

Freshman quarterback Austin Grinsteiner, making his second start, hit 6-of-10 passes for 139 yards and a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jake Herres. Mike Swille ran for two TDs for the Eagles (6-3).

Stephenson plays at Bark River-Harris at 7 p.m. Friday.

A pair of Dickinson County teams and two from Marquette County also advanced Saturday.

Kingsford opened with a 28-6 triumph over Cheboygan in Division 4 and Iron Mountain blanked Boyne City 42-0 in a Division 6 opener.

At Kingsford, senior running back Winston Larson run for 108 yards and three touchdowns and Justin Heupel scored on an 80-yard punt return.

Junior quarterback Derek Ferris passed for 132 yards, one TD and an interception for the Chiefs (6-4). Senior end Trevor Closs caught five passes for 101 yards.

The Flivvers (8-2) host Big Rapids (9-1) in a distric final Saturday.

At Iron Mountain, senior QB Bill Boddy threw for two TDs and ran for another. Junior running back Josh Pender rushed for 120 yards and two scores and senior Taylor Jayne added 112 yards and a TD.

The Mountaineers (8-2), who limited Boyne City to three first downs and 79 yards in total offense, travel to Calumet for their district final Friday. The Ramblers finished 6-4.

Negaunee recovered a fumble at the four-yard line in the waning minutes to stop Grayling 30-28 in D-5 and Westwood scored with 61 seconds left to shock West Iron County 26-22 in D-7.

Negaunee also had a 60-yard interception return for a score by Jordan Velmer to help overcome Grayling (6-4). Cody Dagenais ran 21 times for 143 yards for the Miners (7-3).

At Iron River, Ivan Niemi hit Justin Young with a 46-yard touchdown pass to edge the Wykons. That came one play after WIC's Paul Angeli had a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown erased by a pass interference penalty.

Niemi hit 7-of-16 passes for 133 yards and ran for 82 yards, while Justin Farley ran 22 times for 120 yards for Westwood.

Lake Linden-Hubbell erupted for 28 points in the first quarter and shelled Ontonagon 46-12 to set up a rematch with Crystal Falls Forest Park. LL-H won the season finale 36-6.

Travis Ambuehl had two TDs for LL-H, the U.P. Class D Team of the Year. Mike Schmaus ran for 115 yards and threw a TD pass for the Gladiators (6-4).
