ESCANABA - Leigh and Connie Schmidt will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary at a special dinner Aug. 23 with their children.
The former Connie Bichler married Leigh Schmidt Aug. 23, 1969, during a candlelight ceremony at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba.
Leigh retired in 2002 from Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District as a special education teacher. He ran Special Olympics for 10 years and also a recreational program for the mentally impaired. He now manages a vineyard in Bark River and presently operates Leigh's Garden Winery, Inc. making and producing wine after years of being a home winemaker.

Connie retired in 2003 from her position as a elementary teacher with Escanaba Area Public Schools. She helps in the winery when not traveling, is active with Lutheran Church women, chats in a coffee group and spends time with family and friends.
Both enjoy walking in the mall, and each has special outings planned for the other, in celebration of their 40 years together.
Leigh and Connie are members of Christ the King Lutheran Church where, on their anniversary, flowers will adorn the altar in a show of thanks for their many blessings in life.
The couple has two children - Soren (Rebekah "Beky") Schmidt and Emily (Christian) Nesheim.
Soren serves as Chaplain of Finlandia University in Hancock. Emily is a content project manager, and is also a free-lance copy editor, writer and proofreader in Minneapolis.
