Bass fishing tourney coming to the bay

August 7, 2009
By Todd Guerne

ESCANABA - The BASS Federation Eastern Divisional fishing tournament is set for Aug.12-14 on Little and Big Bay de Noc.

The anglers are from eight states or territories which make up the Eastern Division, including New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Ontario.

The top finisher in each state/territory goes to the BASS Federation championship in October on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Tavares, Fla. and will be televised on ESPN.

In addition to the individual competition, each state/territory will vie for a $30,000 boat.

Steve Masters of the Bays de Noc Convention and Visitors Bureau says a tournament of this nature will bring good publicity to the area.

"With live coverage and information on the Bassmasters website (bassmaster.com), this will be a huge boost for the bays and a shot in the arm for the local economy," said Masters. "The motels, restaurants and gas stations will be busy."

Weigh-ins and boat launch will be held at Escanaba Yacht Harbor. The boats begin launching at 6:30 a.m. with weigh-ins starting at 2:30 p.m. each day.

Also set for Escanaba are the Junior Bassmaster Divisionals and Bassmaster CastingKids events Aug.14. Both formats are catered to BASS youth members and provide qualifying into their respective championship events.

"The bass population is really underfished on the bays. This is normally an area for walleye," said Masters. "It will be pretty exciting hosting different types of fishermen."
